POYNTING GMBH is a small company with its focus on contract research and development as well as equipment manufacturing in the field of Pulsed-Power application. The product range typically comprises customer specific devices and systems for generating pulsed high-level electric and electromagnetic fields as they are used, for example, to form metals with electromagnetic or electrohydraulic pressure or to accelerate particles, like electrons or ions. With a scientific motivated interdisciplinary 10-12 person team, POYNTING company supports all customers, mainly large research centres all over the world as well as from a lot of different industrial sectors, like the automotive industry and their suppliers, but also e.g. representatives from solar technologies, medical, white goods and packaging industries.
POYNTING concentrated ita participation on the project on development and realization of new methods and tools for electromagnetic joining of hybrid composite-metal materials. This joining process was seen either as stand-alone process to produce hybrid material as well as being a part of a process combination to join parts from composite-metal material to other components.
In the role of an equipment manufacturer, POYNTING can deliver the required engineering and RTD work to improve existing basic equipment and to develop new types of EMF equipment, which should be optimized in order to meet the characteristics of the high performance part developed in this project. At the same time POYNTING is interested to transfer labscale equipment into industrial environment, also with respect to economical conditions. Therefore, the planned collaborative work with the project partners was essential. In addition to the EMF machines also the process related tooling was developed and optimized concerning life-time. Additionally, a third main focus of the work at POYNTING was on the development of new finite element simulation tools to be used for process related product design. The practical experiences and investigations was used to define demands and specifications for the simulation tool, and was completed by tests for validation of numerical approaches.
